The Society was founded in Hamburg, on June 19, 1980. In its statutes, it undertook to promote the establishment of a Museum of Labour and Technology, which would collect material testimony, documents, and other objects relating to the history of working conditions, everyday life and the labour movement.

The first step was taken in 1990, with the foundation of the Museum der Arbeit. Work proper on building the collection began on October 22, 1992.

Through their contributions, the members of the Society for the Promotion of the Museum der Arbeit support its development, and help to create a congenial atmosphere in the Museum and the Society itself. The Society supplies considerable support through its public relations work, by organizing events, publishing a newsletter, and giving a helping hand to various voluntary project groups involved with the Museum der Arbeit.

These groups' activities include reconditioning machines, collecting documents, preparing exhibitions, and, generally speaking, making a combined effort to give an idea of the organization and purpose of the Museum. Their experience, knowledge and craftsmanship ensure that visitors get a grasp of working life, of the texture and feel of a working day.

Along with the quarterly gazette, the Society offers its members organized tours and day trips to similar museums, all the information brochures issued by the Museum, as well as invitations to official events and the opportunity to take part in the voluntary study groups of the Museum.
